What Is The #1 Reason To Reduce, Reuse and Recycle?

Reduce, Reuse, Recycle. These 3 important words have been hammered into our brains since childhood but what really makes these words so impactful and why should we follow the 3 Rs in our everyday lives? Is it so that we can be frugal and not be wasteful? Is it because of our attachment to old things that we can’t bear to throw them away and would rather repurpose them? Wrong, the most important and fundamental reason we should always strive to follow the 3 Rs of Reduce, Reuse and Recycle is to protect Mother Nature from potential pollution, waste or climate change. Not only do people at home need to adhere to these principles, even companies like sofa upholstery services must try their best to follow the 3 Rs.

What is Reduce, Reuse and Recycle?

However, following these principles aren’t as simple as they seem. For one, there are 3 different aspects to them, being:

  1. Reduce
  2. Reuse
  3. Recycle
Use reusable cloth bags at supermarkets instead of getting new plastic bags each time

Reduce

To reduce is to lower the amount of waste you produce. This may come in many different forms such as preventive methods like reducing the amount of plastic bags you use when buying from places such as supermarkets and switching to greener alternatives like bringing your own cloth bag when shopping so that you don’t need a plastic bag. Another method pertains to food waste. Usually, households or businesses tend to overbuy fresh produce and food than they can use or consume. This leads to a lot of food wastage at the end of the day as the food might not be fresh after that same day and expire. To prevent this, one should try to plan ahead and only buy as much as needed to avoid overbuying. Another huge contributor to pollution are carbon emissions whether it be from a household setting with car usage or industrial with factories burning fossil fuels which produce a lot of carbon emission which thins the Ozone layer and speeds up global warming. We can all help with reducing this whether it be ditching the car for public transportation or switching to alternative greener energy sources.

Reuse

To Reuse is to repurpose objects to fit another use instead of throwing them away or replacing them. This can be done in small yet creative ways such as repurposing packaging boxes as storage containers, plastic bottles as mini plant pots, poking holes in bottle caps and using bottles as a makeshift watering can and many other ways to reuse in a household.

Recycle

To recycle is to collect and process materials that would otherwise be thrown away as trash and turn them into new products which will benefit your community and the environment. The most common and easiest way is to divide your trash into the ones that can be recycled such as paper waste, metal cans, glass bottles, plastic bottles and cardboard boxes among other things and trash that can’t be recycled. After that, dispose of trash that can’t be recycled in normal trash bins while separating the recyclable trash into their respective material categories and put them in the respective recycling bins.

How does this impact the environment and mother earth?

A lot of waste goes to waste disposal facilities and rubbish landfills which use chemicals or burning. However, this has many harmful side effects such as the trash taking up a lot of space, the burning of the trash releasing harmful gases into the atmosphere, and potential pollution of the nearby water bodies or land. Etc. By reducing the amount of trash that needs to be disposed of in this harmful manner, we can help slow down the ever increasing threat of global warming and help protect mother earth.
